School basketball started while we were away on our South Island trip. Steven was keen
to play and we were able to get him signed up. His first game was on 30 March.

Post-game huddle |
We'd only played Upward basketball back home in Alabama and the school league in New
Zealand was considerably more competitive. It was full court press the entire game with
lots of ball steals and shots taken. Steven's team, the St Joe's Buzzer Beaters, wound
up in the lower division after the initial round-robin. They played well and made it to
the final in the division, losing by only a couple of shots. Steven did great all year
his skills really improved with the faster paced games.

Lunchtime practice |
School sports in New Zealand are decidedly more laid back than sports in the US. Games
were played immediately after school at the local gym and they had maybe three practices
(at school, during lunch) the entire season. The kids still had fun and it was fun to
watch them.

The traditional huddle break goes something
like this:
Three cheers for the other team! Hoora! Hoora! Hoora!
One for the refs! Hoora!
One for us! Hoora!.
