Thursday morning was our first day on the Coromandel peninsula and it was a misty/rainy morning. We drove into downtown Thames for breakfast, but we were stopped by what appeared to be construction. The only thing that didn't fit the construction hypothesis was the smoke machine belching smoke down main street. We pulled a quick u-turn and discovered a crew filming some sort of action film.
Our destination for the day was Whitianga (fit'-e-an-ga) on the northeast coast of the Coromandel. The Coromandel was one of the last areas where Kauris were logged and a few stands of the trees remain. I wanted to take a look and braved the rain while the family stayed in the car.

There really isn't an easy way across the Coromandel, once you're north of Thames, so the best way is to drive up the west coast to Coromandel town, then east across the peninsula and south to Whitianga. We popped into a couple of beaches along the way including New Chums beach. We snapped a couple of photos on the beach, but Laura was stung by a bee and we made our way back to the car.

Whitianga is a big vacation area for Kiwis and our condo was the
nicest of the trip. We were walking distance to the beach and,
importantly, the kids had their own room.
